In the Brooder
I’m trying to better understand egg color genetics. I’ve checked out charts, but I could use some clarification.
I purchased eggs locally from a farm to incubate (they generally just sell their eggs for eating, it’s a mixed flock). The two hens from the batch began laying, and I have questions about how their egg color came to be, based on the roosters on site.
I was told the roosters were a Maran, and a Blue Sapphire Plymouth Rock.
Egg A: Hatched out of a blueish green egg
Egg B: Hatched out of a medium tone brown egg
Egg A chicken: Lays a light bluish green egg
Egg B chicken: Lays dark olive colored eggs
I would have thought that with the two roosters on site, the brown egg would have produced a hen that also lays brown eggs?
Can anyone clarify this for me?
Thanks in advance for helping me wrap my brain around this!!
