Every one has such interesting stories!
Mine is this:
DH had a few hens left free ranging when we got together. (4 1/2 years ago)
He would bring in fresh eggs every day, and I loved the flavor!
I was scared to death of chickens, I was raised on a farm & my Mom would order 500 roosters every year for meat. My brother would catch them & hold as many as he could in his hands by their feet & chase me with them. They would peck & pinch me. I would have to feed & water them as chicks, but when they got their feathers I refused to go anywhere near the chicken house.
DH said he used to pay for his chicken feed by selling eggs, & wanted me to get some chickens. I told him he was crazy if he thought I was going to tend to chickens.
Well, he talked me into Ameraucana's, cause I thought the blue eggs were so neat. We went to
TSC & he picked out some Black Sex Link pullets & a few EE's. I wouldn't touch them, but I would take care of them. I would sit & watch them for hours, they were just so cute. I still wouldn't pick one up. Finally if he would pick it up, I would hold one. After they started to grow, & since I was the one tending to them, they started to fly up on me, which scared me to death.
He almost had to replace the door to the brooder room the first time they did this. It took me awhile to get it through my mind that they were not going to hurt me. I started to get over my fear, and now I keep around 150 to 200 laying age hens, sell eggs, & last year we hatched over 3000 chicks.
I have had 20 different breeds of standards & 42 breeds of bantams at one time that I was hatching eggs from.
I quit my job & stay home & tend to the livestock.
I have sold most of the bantams now, and am trying to cut back to 4 or 5 breeds of standards. It was taking me 8 hours just to do my chickens chores every day.
I won't tolerate a mean rooster, though. We had 2, a mixed standard & a Cochin bantam. They do not live here anymore!!!
I can say I have gotten over my fear of chickens, and can't imagine being without them anymore.
