As the title says " how did you get started selling chicken products?"

I really enjoy having chickens around and would like to try and make a little money off them to feed my habit. I currently only have 5 hens that are laying but that will change in the months to come and have some meat birds currently in the brooder.

I was wondering how some of you guys got started making money off your chickens. How did you get the word out about your eggs/meat/chicks....?

I thought about starting at farmers markets or putting an ad in the paper. It would be really nice to find a collective to sell my eggs to and let them take them to retail.

I have not yet started selling anything, but am this upcoming summer. We are starting small with just a few dozen eggs at a farmers market we will be joining. We are hoping that by the fall or next spring we will also be processing meat birds as well. The first thing I did was reaserch the legalities of selling to the public in my area, I would highly suggest you do the same. I started by telling family/friends, and they told thier family/friends and things have been spread word of mouth. My farm partners and I also do a lot of networking in the farm and food community. One of the best things you can do to get started is just getting out talking with people. Thats how we hooked up with a market organizer. You can also check the newspaper, craigslist, markets and small grocers to see what other people are charging so you can price competivley. Good Luck!
