How did you get started with ducks?

I'd love to hear how everyone first got started with ducks...

Here's my story: I've always LOVED animals and I thought someday that I'd have some geese. I had been thinking geese because I love waterfowl and wanted something that wouldn't fly off and leave me. Almost 3 years ago, I moved from the city of St. Louis out into the next county. It's much more rural and I live on 2 acres. I finally started reading up and learned that there are lots of duck breeds that don't fly so that's how I got hooked on ducks. I do love geese, but ducks always look, well, happier to me. I finally felt ready to take the plunge this Spring and found my 2 little Rouens and my 2 little Pekins at a local feed/hardware store on 4-25-15. They had just been hatched on 4-22-15. My life has been just ducky ever since!

Awwww! :) Atleast you did the sensible thing and did your research.

I went to an agricultural and brought home two ducklings. My mum was not impressed.
We have spent a FORTUNE building coops, enclosures and all sorts for them now but wouldn't be without.
We now have eight ducks ! :D

What a nice story!

I wanted chickens and then backed out of the order due to financial reasons. I was reading around that ducks are easier on lawns and they are super cute and I decided I wanted ducks instead. The feed store had 2 left and they lady wanted them gone and sold them as 2 for 1. They turned out to be boys and we they now live at a coworkers ranch. I ordered my girls and love them! I also have 3 chickens now too.

Nice stories
I was looking into chickens also. Ducks seemed less likely to have health issues. When I heard the horror stories about chickens digging and scratching up the yard, it just seemed that ducks would be better garden companions. Also less noise with the muscovy. I love them, their poop is great fertilizer, they wiped out my dandelion problem, are great pest control, always make me smile and lay eggs. I do get tired of washing off my patio and grass but they are worth it to me. I also have quail.
I forgot to mention, I'm not handy with a hammer and with the weather here, Duck housing is pretty basic.

Mine started with the mountain river down below us, I was walking the dogs along it one day and saw 3 Muscovy's ducks floating along. Didn't even know there was a duck called Muscovy so went to the library didn't have a computer this was in 2004 too, well come to find out a couple across the river had gone and gotten ducks and chickens and predators were wiping them out so these ducks high tailed to the river where I met them. I went down everyday to visit, found the female dead one morning so decided I wanted to adopt the 2 drakes dh says they don't belong to me if I want ducks go gets some well we all know what happened there, I went a bought 3 Muscovy female and brought them home that was Sept of 04 needless to say I did end up adopting one of the drakes when he ended up being the only one left and my girls fell in love with him. I still have him he is 11 yrs old. I cannot imagine not having ducks , of course after having them for 3 yrs I wanted geese too so one of my ducks hatched me a goose who ended up being a gander that was 2007 he lived with the ducks for 5 yrs before I got him an actual goose for a mate. Now I have 4 geese and then of course 2009 Chickens came into our lives when we adopted a mama and her 10 chicks she hatched in the woods where my dh worked. Nope I will not be getting any Emus. or Turkeys although I have thought of them and Guineas but I most likely won't.

Cute story:

For about 4 years, my husband has wanted ducks. Every time he went to Tractor Supply around Easter, he almost came home with some. Last year, our 18 month old grandson, Luke, wanted ducks. I was out numbered. A friend of mine had 3 ducklings that she wanted to give to me. I did a lot of research, and we had ducks. They have their own compound complete with house and pool. I am the one who takes care of them. I was surprised at how soon I fell in love with these big personalities. They are a hoot!! As for Luke, he loves visiting Oma's ducks!!
