I think my Maran is close to hatch time and I have NO experience at all with hatching chicks in any way. Are there any signs or behaviors I can watch for?
I dont want to disturb her too much or hurt any chicks.

Any hints out there? I cant wait for our new babies!!!!!

There are some signs, but keep in mind the hen is doing her best to hide the fact, so you just kind of have to watch for something. I just count off 21 days, and go in and lift her up, (carefully) and take a look. But my broodies are used to being handled a bit. I don't pick her completely up, just kind of lift the front enough to take a peek.

When a clutch is close to hatching, the hen tends to not get up at all as this is when the humidity needs to stay high. She may also get a little more protective, but that is also dependent on the hen herself. My two silkies brooded together for the first time this spring and would always let me pet them. Only trilling slightly, as a warning.
