Someone else suggested that, too. The birdbath is mostly under a bush. Seems weird that a worm-eating bird wouldn't swallow the worm right away.

If it happens during after a storm, it might be possible that the earthworm may have been carried in the rainclouds....not sure if rainclouds can "hold" items like that. Fishes have been found flopping in backyards during a storm.
