To OP: Regarding culling your flock to get to the ones you intend to keep for laying and for breeders. You might want to band them. Either band the keepers, or band the ones that you plan to cull. But, here's a question for you: Would you rather eat the pullets you cull from the flock, or perhaps sell them so you can recoup some of your costs? A pullet at POL will bring $10 - 15. That makes for a mighty expensive meal if you choose to eat her instead. I eat the cockerels, and sell the extra pullets.
Agreed, handling the birds, as well as observing their behavior, assessing their coloring, and how quickly they are maturing will enter into the decision process.
