Not sure if this is the right area but I was wondering how to go about starting a compost from my flocks droppings when cleaning the coop? Do I just put it in a pile somewhere or what? Haven't seen this posted before. Photos are appreciated if someone has an easy compost creation.

leaves, grass clippings, poop, kitchen stuff(no meat or grease)only veggie and coffee or tea grounds. Add some water and turn it every other day. Helps if you have something to confine it but you can just have it in a nice corner out of the way. It will slowly break down. New stuff needs to stay on top for a couple of days. It will soon turn into dirt put in garden and watch it grow.

What about odor? Does it smell bad from composting? I have neighbors on all sides and I don't want the odor to bother anyone. Can I put hay in there too?

We've been composting with their droppings for awhile. The odor hasn't become too offensive that I can tell...ours is in a trough style without a lid so maybe it aerates a bit better that way.

First you need a donkey, 2 goats, a pot bellied pig and 25 baby geese. Put the baby geese in that big water hole outside the back door. Put the pig and the two goats over on the left side of the property. Donate the donkey to your office. This way the goslings will be happy. The neighbor wont smell the compost because of the pig and goats and the donkey will do wonders.

I cleaned my coop. got about 4 big green trash bags of poop and pine shavings. Tilled it straight into my garden with a couple of 40lb bags of lime. I waited a week and planted. So far so good. I am using the the pine shaving and dropppings from my brooder box to spread around my smaller trees. I figure the poop from the chicks can't be harmful.

I actually put mine straight into the garden when I cleaned out my winters worth of deep litter in late Feb. I flipped it with the dirt a little, but even the shavings are broken down now.....but a whole winters worth of deep litter is pretty potent stuff! I wouldn't try that anywhere close to planting time.

beachchikie's got it right Just put it all in one place and turn from time to time.

You got me on that one.

I read somewhere that it's not a good thing to turn the heap regularly, which I know flies in the face of popular belief, but I tried this myself since June 2009, and it works perfectly.

Just toss all of your composting material in a slightly sheltered area, (under a tree/beside a windbreak, etc) so that the sun and wind can't dry the heap out too much. I sprayed mine with water twice during summer, though we had decent rains so the heap was kept slightly moist, and when I turned it for the first time three days ago ......Black Gold!
