I am incubating 12 eggs that are on day 10. I just got a Hydrometer to find that the humidity is at 70%. TOO HIGH!!!

The water is on the bottom of the 'bator in the canals under the wire and eggs. I'm not sure how to get the water out without disturbing the eggs too much.

Any tips or advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Shove some paper towels in there. They will suck up the water. I made this mistake once. It isn't the amount of water you put in that determines the humidity, it is the surface area So a table spoon of water spread out like you have it will create more humidity than a cup of water in a tall skinny jar. Clear as mud?

Soak up what you can and open a vent to let out that extra humidity. Start with a small bowl or cup of water and go up from there.

And, yes - calibrate!!

This is from the humidity thread;

Here's how to calibrate a hygrometer:

Using a mug, mix a half cup of salt with about a half cup of water to make a salt slurry. Place the mug and your hygrometer into a large Ziplock bag and seal it. Wait for 12 hours. Your hygrometer should read 75%. If is off one way or another, just at the difference to your display when you read it and make adjustments to your humidity based on the new value. For instance, our hygrometer read 71% after 12 hours. I new that I needed to add 4% to the displayed number to know what the humidity truely was.

Thanks, I've just gone to the kitchen and I did this. My hydrometer is now calibrating.

You're welcome, one more thing that wasn't stated in the directions, try to keep the hygrometer dry while calibrating, and keep it away from sunlight.

Okay, the hydrometer is now calibrated.

I just took the eggs out for a moment and emptied one of the troughs. I hope it makes a big difference!

I hope the eggs are okay...

My friend just hatched 8/12 with the same 'bator and the same amount of water as I had in there. But the humidity was still too high...

I needed to calibrate my hygrometer and read about it on another thread here. It said that percentage off is calculated not by the degrees off on the hygrometer, but by percentage off such as...85/75....1.13%. So, if your reading is 85 in the bag, you hygrometer is 1.13% off, not 10%. To find out what your hygrometer will read for a 50% humidity, you need to multiply 1.13 x50=56.6. At least, that is what I read on another thread. I hope I understood correctly, and I hope this helps you. I found the thread because it was referenced by sav the favs on her hatch along thread.
