How do I find the best feed to buy?

How does one new to all this go about finding the best feed possible? I have read in all these chicken books scattered around me that there are various types of feed available - organic, non-GMO, local, specialty local mill-mixed.

Where do I start to look around me other than heading to the local big box farm supply megastore that might not have the best quality feed options?
