How do I fire the lawn guy nicely?

Cheryl, you sound like a softie. Nothing wrong with that, but there are a bunch of people who have no problem taking advantage of someone like you. Give me his phone number. I'll fire him for you

yeah, I do have a contract, but he has breached it by not coming every 10 days.

To be honest, I don't really want him to come anymore. I would rather just do the lawn myself and save the $$. Now that I am down to just one son at home (and even that is minimal), I have more energy to do stuff because I am no longer cleaning up after 3 perfectly capable grown men.

Oh, please no lies! There are too many lies & liars in this world.

It wouldn't be a lie. Money is tight and while I would make the effort to find the money if he were doing a great job and I was not stressing over it, I certainly can find a more worthy use of my money.

How about telling him someone else mentioned the state of your overgrown yard to you...like:

"Hey Joe Mower Guy - Someone mentioned to me that my grass was getting tall, and I realized for my business it might be a good idea to have my lawn mowed once a week - or at least every 10 days, like 'Mr. Former Guy Who Recommended You' did. I can afford to pay $30 (insert your number) a week if you can give me once-a-week service. I know you're busy, so if you don't think this schedule will work out for you, do you think 'Mr. Former Guy Who Recommended You' knows anyone else who'll be able to come every week?"

This approach puts the ball in his court, isn't really confrontational (you're just passing on information), and it lets him know that you are ready to call someone else. If you don't already, you might pay weekly instead of monthly if you can, so you're not out the money if he doesn't show up.

By the way, dblreedr, I just wanted to let you know I think your grass is overgrown, and it would probably be a good idea for you to get it mowed more often. (There - no lies!)

I am a big softy (read push-over) - why else would I hire someone to do my lawn when I had 3 grown sons living in my house!

I believe in what goes around comes around, but there are days when I question my faith in that.

Thanks for all the advice. I will see what comes out of my mouth when I see him today.

Off to find a cup of tea before the little ones wake up from their nap. Thank goodness it is Friday, Feller is heading out of town with Maggie the dog to visit his sister, remaining son is off to housesit for the ex. I will have the whole house to myself for 2 days and nights!

Yeah, but that has generally involved moving whilst they are at work and leaving no forwarding address.

Cheryl

You could do the same thing, just think of the look on the new owners face when the yard guy finally shows up.
