How do I get Buff Columbian Wyandottes?

You could use either of those but it would take longer. As both of the colours of wyandotte recommended by Grant are available you'd save a lot of time & trouble by obtaining those rather than outcrossing away from the breed.

The book was interesting, I got it on ebay. Its the one on feathersites wyandotte page. I think it was like $20 US, I dont think it was worth that much but I liked it, it has helped me alot.

With sussex you have to worry about type and leg color and comb, columbian wyandottes would be better. I have seen some good columbian wyandottes from McMurray and the partridge arent that bad either.

DANNY: how was that?

I will see what I can find for wyandottes I know where I can get Partridge I just need to find Wyandotte.
I live in Canada so US hatcherys aren't an option.

Yoker if you can find columbian hens. Start with two pair. Glw roosters to their hen. Roosters from this mating will be sexlinked and lighter in color. Hens should be columbian with dirtyness on their backs. Breed f1's together get a bunch pick out the best rooster. Once you have a good buff columbian rooster just mate him to columbian hens to get more buff columbian hens. This was taught to me by a guy from austraial on this site he raised buff columbians for 12 years. Hope this helps. Mike

Yoker,

This is what you can do with the birds you have or can get.

The rhode island red is a columbian restricted gold bird. They have wheaten and mahogany in them. They must have Db or a restrictor similar to Db. Yellow skin and single comb. I just made a test cross and it will help me determine if Rhode Island carry Db. I think they do because they have clear neck hackles.

If you use a gold laced wyandotte- they are brown at the E locus and carry melanotic, pattern gene and the columbian gene. The melanotic and pattern gene are linked ( about 10 map units between the two) so they should segregate together about 90 % of the time. Yellow skin and rose combed. I picked the gold laced wyandotte because they are columbian restricted and you can get them.

Cross a RIR with a gold GLW. All the chicks will be the same so do not hatch very many. Enough to get a male and a 3 or so females. Skin color are the same-and both are sex linked Id.

The F1 chicks will be eb/ewh, Co/Co, R/r+, Ml-Pg/ml+-pg+,Mh/mh+, (maybe Db/db+). If you get single combed chicks the wyandotte is heterozygous (split) for rose comb.

Cross a male F1 with the female F1s. Produce as many chicks as you can 30 or more. From this hatch you should get what you want.

The wheaten and columbian restricted birds will have less black in the hackles. The brown and columbian restricted birds will have more black in the hackles. Only use birds for breeding that have hackle feathers where the black pigment runs down the central shaft of the neck and saddle hackles. The outer edge of the hackle feathers will be red/buff. Do not use birds that have solid black neck hackles that is caused by melanotic. You want to breed out the melanotic. The darker red birds will carry mahogany so do not use them. Use the birds that are buff. Pick birds that have the least amount of black in the back and breast feathers or the best columbian restriction.

Pick birds that have the best body type and breed them together until you get the body type you want.

You could use a light sussex and a GLW but that would introduce white skin and the silver gene. The RIR have yellow skin and are the gold gene.

Yoker,

It does not make any difference which is male or female. If you cross silver birds with gold birds then you want the female to be silver and the male be gold if you want gold birds. If you want silver birds use a silver male and a gold female.

If you can not get the type you want, then you will gave to get a partridge or columbian bird to work with to regain type.

Tim

Yoker you use a buff wyandotte over columbian wyandotte. I just sold out of buff columbians this spring. There are some out there. Check with the wyandotte club. There may be somebody with buff columbians you can get hooked up with.
