Freezer quail are really quiet

Honestly they all make a noise that could be considered irritating. Coturnix lay a lot more eggs so people hatch a lot more chicks and often have extra males which leads to the noise.

If it is just my breeding birds I can have a dozen roosters each with their little covey and maybe only hear a crow once or twice a day. Happy roosters don't make much noise at all.

I hold back twice as many roos as I need until I move them out to the breeding pen. The largest go out first but if they are too noisy they get replaced. They will speak up a little if they run out of food or water but are generally pretty quiet. Most of the crowing happens when I'm tending to them. The pen is maybe 35 feet from my bedroom window and I sleep with it open with no problems. Neighbors have not said anything and my 18 quail have been less noisy than the jays nesting across the street or the 5 or 6 pairs of mourning doves which aren't that loud but make noise all day long.

The urge to crow is mostly a hormonal response, so it'll be interesting to see if I can reduce crowing while maintaining fertility through the generations.

Not that I know of, although I'd be interested to find out that there are. But if you want quails that don't crow, then get females. Or darken their cage completely.

I know everyone's neighbor situation is different, but I didn't find coturnix to be very loud at all. Where I got my first batch of eggs, the guy was raising a couple hundred in a one car garage attached to his house...he lived in a neat and tidy residential area. You could hear them when you got out of the car only faintly.

I raise them in my garage and I live in a much more densely populated area. My lot is only 42' wide and there is less than 15 feet from house to house to house to house. I can spit on 4 different houses from standing on my back porch. They are a LOT quieter than my banty roo, lol!! Then again, my banty roo is a heap quieter than the large, barking dogs...the sirens, motorcycles, hood-rats yelling, children screaming, garbage trucks, lawnmowers, power tools and various other noises. Mash all those together at one time, and my little birds crowing during daylight hours is a drop in the noise bucket.

I like their little chortle thankfully.
