To add, hardware cloth formed into a funnel does wonders at letting a critter out, without letting them back in. Make it a flat funnel, so they can squeeze their way out to freedom, but can't come back in through the opening.

Mount it securely to the opening in the soffet. You don't want the critter to tear it off.
