What can I safely use to help get rid of the flies?

not saying you have a dirty coop or anything but cleaning more can help, you can put black soldier fly larva out they are fly eating machines.

preventive measures (i prefer the cost effective ways)


insect screen to block them from coming in contact with the manure (if needed)($10 for a roll of 4'x25'

fly traps (using chicken manure instead of expensive fly baits)

clean the coop more frequently

use materials that will absorb odor and moisture (dried, odorless manure will not attract as much flies as wet,smelly manure)

Thanks for the responses. It's a new coop and I live in Florida we had flies an hour after I added the chicks.

I hang vanilla car fresheners around my coop and in the trees. also by my back door.
Flies love poop, hate vanilla.
I buy them at the dollar store.

That's interesting! I'll have to give that one a try.

If you use fly predators, make sure you are putting them on manure that the chickens can't get to and thus, eat the fly predator larvae. The fly predators lay their eggs in the maggots and the young predators hatch out in a few days, thus killing the maggots and preventing adult flies. Birds and chickens love the larvae!

How can I get rid of them on the coup walls? Can I spray soapy water and is it safe for my girls?

Fly predators do really help, check Spalding online. Permethrin comes in powder or liquid spray, and is labelled for chickens, check at the farm store. It comes in different dilutions, and make sure to follow directions! Your birds will eat flies and maggots, but still, UGH! Mary
