How do I help my chickens in Excessive HEAT?

I have been giving my hens lots of cool water, lettuce, grapes, frozen peas and frozen corn. Luckily they have shade because I have a canvas top on the aviary run ubove their coop. And there are trees. They haven't wanted to free range this week. Prefer the shade. Letting them out early in the morning and in the evening when there is more shade in the backyard. Also cooling down the run and coop with cool water from the hose.

By the way...had a fly problem in this heat even though I clean the coop and hose off the run everyday. Tried the shiney pennies in a half a bag of water in a ziplock bag. Did 2 and ziptyed them to the run. Believe it or not it seems to work!!!

We have had some real bad heat here in Colorado, and it's all dry and horrid. So we fill and freeze water bottles and throw them around in the coop, we also spray down the ground with water so the chickens can dig down and cool off (they love doing that), we freeze pineapple and watermelon rinds with just a little meat left on them and give them to the chickens right out of the freezer. Hope this helps some!

Explain the penny and water thing please! The flies out here are driving me crazy and they are driving my chickens and goats crazy as well!

I saw it on facebook. Not sure how it works. Need to hang on all sides of my run. Not sure how it works. Look it up on the internet. Some people say they see their reflection. Others say it looks like a predator. With 2 I have seen a major reduction. On the other side of the coop I didn't put any. Will do that today! Use shiny pennies!

All you do is put a couple pennies in a bag half full of water and hang it up. You can hang it from a tree or just about anything and anywhere you have flies. I do not understand how it works. It has worked for me sometimes and other times it has not. It is always worth a try.

I used to work at a large scale poultry farm and the only thing they ever did was run fans.
I personally have plastic snow sleds I put in the shade with 2 inches of water in them and they stand in those.
Or I just run water on the ground in the spots puddles normally form, I have heavy clay so water does soak in.

Thanks! I will def give it a try! Between the goats, ducks and chickens, I have hordes of flies trying to get into my house and it's just disgusting!
