How do I keep my chickens to one area?

I’m having a problem where my six chickens are pooping all over my moms furniture and roaming to areas of the backyard that they should go to. How can I make sure that they only roam in an area of my backyard. And is this possible without putting up fences everywhere?

Realistically, a fence really is the only option, whether a permanent or temporary one. Or motion detection sprinklers, if you're just trying to protect a small area, like a patio.
