How do I keep my homemade bread fresh? what do you do with stale bread

I cube up leftover bread and put it in a paper bag to use for stuffing. Once it dries out it won't go bad.

Then there's always those bread-crazy chickens...

We make what we call "crunchies"...slice the bread as if for sandwiches and butter one side. Sprinkle the buttered side with garlic salt, dried parsley flakes, and a pinch of onion powder. Stack the slices and slice across making 4 bread sticks of each piece of bread. Lay them out on a foil covered cookie sheet in a single layer and bake in a 300° oven until they are brown and crisp. Cool and store in a zip-lock bag.

We eat them as snacks and with meals.

Last bread making day I tried a new trick: using the portion of dough for one pan loaf, I divided the dough in half, rolled each into a round ball, and put both side by side in the greased loaf pan, let rise, baked, then cooled on a rack. When cool, I just pulled the two "baby loaves" apart, wrapped one well for the freezer and had the other one to slice for my breakfast toast each morning. You should be able to get 7-10 slices out of one baby loaf depending on how thick you slice your bread.

I love homemade croutons: cubed bread tossed with olive oil and Penzy's Sandwich Sprinkle, bake at 300 F until brown and very crunchy. Keep in an airtight container.

Your post reminded me of this recipe. They are both the same recipe but the blog gives a little more detail. It is such wonderful bread I thought I'd like to share...pun intended.

The small loaf pans that make about 1/2 loaf. Roll dough into proper size for pans and freeze extra dough and then bake when needed. Or just bake several small loafs and thaw as needed. Not the same as fresh from the oven but still better than store bought.

feed it to a chicken....or peahen... my peahen loves leftover crusts

I've been baking bread, and also wondering how to store it. I've been keeping it in a ziplock on the counter, but after a few days I'm not too thrilled with the texture of it. I think I'll do as someone else said and cut it half and freeze the other half. I always fed stale bread to the chickens, but now that I'm making my own bread I'll be darned if I'm feeding it to the critters! So, like someone else said, I have been making bread crumbs and keeping them in the freezer. But, I don't use breadcrumbs all that often, so it'll be back to feeding the stale stuff to the critters. At least I know what's in it ....
