How do I kill it?

He doesn't look too big for your standard large or "raccoon size" trap. Just be sure to put the bait all the way to the back (and even tie it to the back wall) so he has to get right in there to get it out.

And just shoot him. Drowning is just another way that humans try to make the process easier on themselves, because they don't have to see it -- it is of no advantage to the animal. No sense making him struggle against the water and the cage for no reason, you can shoot him right through the wire at point blank. The death will be relatively quick.

I agree. Probably isn't good that he's NOT afraid of you and/or anyone else....
PLEASE don't drown. I know it's a matter of opinion etc BUT it's senseless. def shoot it.
good luck!

I love all of these non-trappers that give trapping advice, lol. Drowning is not a inhumane way to kill, in fact, the BMPs (Best Management Practices) agree that drowning is a very humane way to kill trapped animals.

However, although plenty of fox have been caught in cage traps, the odds are against it. Is there no way you could keep your cats in the house or barn for a few days? If it was a coyote, I could suggest tightening pan tension to avoid your cats, but red fox and cats are similar in weight, so if you adjusted the tension to guarantee not catching a cat, you'd likely miss the fox as well. You could try using a fruity bait, such as watermelon (which fox and coyote love and cat's don't) but there's still always a chance your cat would stumble into the trap accidentally. If you used a #1.5 coilspring, you could release your cat unharmed, although his foot might be sore for a few days. I'd reccommend caging the cats until you catch it in a foot trap, because if he gets a chance he wont turn down a cat dinner either.

We have foxes and coyotes that roam around our farm; they have not gotten to any of our chickens or other birds, but I know they are around. My son-in-law shot and killed a coyote in the back pasture a few days ago.

Can't you just capture it and call animal control or the local sheriff to come get it. I really don't agree with drowning it. Please Don't do that Please

Have you ever had a near death experience by drowning? I have, and it wasn't fun. In fact, it was probably the worse experience in my life. If for some reason I had to die, I'd rather be killed by a gun, and not drowning. It's painful and seems like it lasts forever. I'm not trying to start anything though, just giving my opinion. To the OP, do whatever you feel is right.

Seems to me if you shot it once you can shoot it again. Or hire someone. Catch it in a leg trap and then shoot it. Call the local gun club and offer a bounty. Check the local high school science teacher. Ours would have no problem taking it out. How about the scouts? Do they give merit badges for hunting?
