How do I kill it?

The reason I going to kill this fox is because it needs to go. I don't care if it is just doing what foxes do. I free range so when we have predators they gotta go. Skunks, Coons, Coyote, fox whatever. They gotta go. I don't need anymore speeches on free rangeing being irresponsible either. I've talked to a friend of mine who is a trapper and we are going to figure something out. I need to be able to get him without hurting any of my other animals. Also he didn't show up on the cam last night. So we'll see if he shows up tonight.

Sorry to hear you are having fox problem. I have just dealt with the same situation. I had a red fox living under a shed about 50 feet from my hen house. I tried everything for about 3 months to get rid of the beautiful guy...he just kept coming back. I blocked off the shed entry ways, tried coyote urine, scared him away, to no avail. I ended up hiring a trapper, that did use a leg trap. He set it up in the early evening, and by morning, the fox was in the trap. He had to be shot, which broke my heart, but only way to keep my chickens, dog and cat, and my family safe. Trapper set trap again, just in case, and the next morning, we had a female red fox in the trap! Must have been planning a family and getting a den ready. Thank goodness she was not pregnant (at least she didn't appear to be) and she was not nursing, so no kits yet. She was shot by the trapper....It broke my heart, they are beautiful animals, but they will kill your chickens and keep killing, plus, you risk rabies and other diseases. Hire a trapper, a licensed trapper- they know what they are doing and will do the job properly, and quickly....
Now, my chickens free range, my kitty goes out safely, and everyone is happy again....
Hopefully, no more foxes will move in! If they do, I know a guy......

Shooting isn't always quick. I was attacked by a rabid fox last spring. It took the sheriff four shots at close range. It was a horrible experience in the first place but, to also hearing shot after shot was just as terrible. He just wouldn't die.

Did the sheriff do head shots repeatedly? Or was he aiming at the body/trunk? With a cage, the fox stays put and you can get close range with a rifle to do a head shot.

Foxes are much smaller than most think. Skinned, the carcass is not much larger than a cat. The sheriff probably was not connecting with a lethal shot if it took four to kill the fox. The sarcoptic mange mites that cause mange in foxes will not use a human for a host and will not cause mange in a person.

As a trapper I've watched a couple of animals drown and was amazed how absolutely calm they were when it happened. If they struggle in a cage trap under the water, it is more likely the effort to get out of the trap than being under water in of itself that causes an energetic reaction. There are plenty of humane ways to kill animals. I won't endorse a particular one over another (except maybe a shot to the head), but will counter the myth of drowning's inhumanity. Drowning for a human is not comparable to drowning for an animal. We have a much higher level of reasoning and an ability to extrapolate the consequences of drowning in a way that an animal can't.

You might check with your local game and fish department. Ours will loan out a live trap. If you talk to the right person, they might get you one and then you can trap it safely, or if you get one of your cats, it won't get hurt, and then you can shoot it, skin it and hang it for other foxes as an example (jk
