i suggest remove the top cover and let the sun get in to it. or use fire to burn the mites... ...

R&RCoop :

We us Permethrin-10 in our coop, keeps control of the mites and other bugs.

this stuff works I buy it at TSC and it has directions for poultry and perimeter areas may also try flea and tick spray for dogs the red mites you are describing aren't the easiest to get rid of I've have always been told that they stay on the roost in cracks and small places during the day and bother the birds at night while on roost so be sure to spray everything good let it soak in the cracks

an oil based spray for the coop may work better as it won't wear off as quick I have heard of mixing the Permethrin with mineral oil

I bought DE at our feed mill, and from AzureStandard.com (they deliver to drop sites all over but not yet NY methinks)
The other day I moved the DE bag & found pill bugs, spiders, and a potato bug living in a pile of it that had leaked out...but no flies or mites!
I have a bunch of outdated flax oil that I pour on perches to smother mites, but am still having a problem with leg scale mites

An old farmer told me to pour diesel on perches.
We keep a small spray bottle of ACV (apple cider vinegar) by the brooder to add to the water, and I sprayed the feet of one who was scratching herself after their trip outside for the day. No more scratching.

:idunnoFor leg scale mites you're supposed to mix one part kerosene to two parts linseed oil and brush that on the roosts. At the same time put vaseline on their legs. I've heard someone else say to spray WD40 on their legs, but that sounds a little unsafe for the chicken.

Linseed oil can also be applied to nests, cracks in walls or floors to rids housing of parasites. It can cause a fire hazard though. I think most liquid chemicals like that would.

This all came from "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" by Gail Damerow (new edition)

Let me know if anyone else has heard about or used the WD40 thing!
