how do i know if my hen enjoys being picked up?

I should change that to "my current friendliest chickens." Years ago I did have a couple who would voluntarily jump up onto my lap. That is rare though.

I currently have 5 that will!

Hi guys! heres and update. I cuddle her everyday whenever she askes for it now.

Often, it starts with me in the yard looking at the other chickens or giving out treats, then she will run up and squish inbetween my legs/ankles

Then i put both hands out and she walks right into them until i pick her up.

I think she likes being picked up now! there werent any treats involved in this process, so i hope she genuinely loves me

fyi: the boots chicken in the background is in purgatory right now because she went broody right after we gave our other broody hen chicks. thats why she's separated in a cage

But im worried she doesnt actually enjoy it and is just doing it because she thinks she has no choice.

Entering my chicken pen is like wading into a pool of piranhas. The rule in Casa CatUmbrella is that if you bite a finger, or peck my leg/clothing hard enough to make me scream, you get picked up and cuddled for a few minutes (assuming it's not too hot out). Some can't wait for it to be over. Others close their eyes and fall asleep.

They do not have a choice and I do not feel bad. Cry me a tiny bantam river.

Glad to hear your girl is coming around and seeing it's not so bad to be loved on!
