I currently have an ad for a free rooster in my local paper. I clearly state that he is a pet and not to go to freezer camp or the crock pot... or the fighting ring

I have had many many replies some are sick and some are funny.. some are just plain confused.

example:
I love that kind of rooster is still available?... (I never stated breed he is a barn yard mix)
is he an aggressive rooster? I will put him in with my other roosters... (ummm NOT)
about how much does he weigh?
does he crow?

I have politely replied to everyone asking for pics of their coop and please make sure the date stamp is working on the camera... hmmmm no one has ever gotten back to me with pics of their glorious coops

Is that a ridiculous request? for a free PET rooster?

depends girly... i take in free roosters........ for freezer camp

Ditto

Edited- if you wanna make sure no one eats him, ask for $20 for him. You are HIGHLY unlikely to get anyone BUT chicken mommies willing to pay that. Then you can GIVE him to the right home.

The rooster we got, we found out about on Craiglist. The woman had posted $5 for him and DH and I schlepped out to the other side of the state to go buy him. When we got there, we explained that we wanted a roo for our hens and that so long as he behaved himself (didn't attack our daughter) he wouldn't be eaten. When I got the $5 out of my purse she said, "Just take him. I don't want any money for him. I just want him to go somewhere where he won't be eaten. I just put a price on there to keep the weirdoes away."

She then told us that she used to have emus and posted "Free Emus" on CL. She said that she had a lot of weirdoes emailing or calling her.

"I'll take your free emus."
"Do you have facilities to care for 6 foot tall birds?"
"Gosh, they get that big? I thought they were like turkeys."
"No, they're six foot tall birds like ostriches that can kill you if they kick you."

Put a price on him then give him to the person who gives you the best vibes.

So far our rooster has kept up his end of the bargain ... and we're keeping ours.

he is good to the girls but i simply have to many roos...

I know what you mean! I have given away a few free roos that i was attached to..and i still wonder if they are okay...

Well if you have a local meetup group or yahoo group, or any thing like that sometimes you can find someone who needs a certain breed of rooster. I sold 2 pure BO cockerels that way, and they got their own flock of ladies so it worked out. I charged $5 each for them. The going price for roosters in my area is $5-7, I suppose it's a "don't eat him" fee.

yeah..thats what i did..i put them on CL for like $10-15... just to feel people out..and then when they came to pick him up..i just said that i didnt want any money for him..that i just wanted him to have a good home...

thanks everyone... i think i will have to put a price on him $250 sound right...LOL (jk)

Me, too! I even tossed a guy out one day, because he was clueless when he showed up. Didn't even know which was the roo. Out of 9 hens and 1 roo? He got a bit horsey when I asked him to leave, made me a bit nervous.
I prefer that people come when DH is hanging around - but I always have my trusty pepper spray handy now.
