It is really rare, and usually occurs in older hens. Some hens have problems with their ovaries causing the production of female hormones to decrease; and they will stop laying. Those hens can develop a cock's hackle and saddle feathers, grow spurs, crow and mount other hens. Genetically though they are still female, and like I said it is rare and generally occurs most often in older hens.Really? Ugh.
