I recieved some pullets from a hatchery back in March and they have grown quite a bit inside (kept them in a box inside the house in an isolate room for about 2 months). When they got old enough to stand the colder weather (by that time it was getting warm again outside) I put them outside under our chicken house in pens up off the ground and separated them by breed.
We have a horrible problem with coccidia and even with treatment some of our chickens die that haven't been exposed to it before, so we're very careful as to how young we put them on the ground. We tried putting them on the ground back in May, but we lost 2 within 36 hours, so everyone went back in the pens.
Now it's like they can't put any weight on. They stay skinny and hungry even though they don't eat all the food we give them. We feed them a mixture of several different types of corn from our local feed store. We try giving them bread and bananas and leftover beans and mashed potatoes too (which they love). But still, no weight is being gained.
Our chickens that are currently on the ground are older and they are plump and eat wonderfully. I just don't understand why we can't get this batch of chicks to get at a good body weight.
I would like to know if there are any special kinds of scratch feed or corn that I can feed them. Or supplements. We have 20 chicks that need muscle and body fat fast.
Thanks in advance
