How do I raise the humidity slowly?

My eggs have been set for 2 days now and the humidity stays between 40-50. And it only goes up when I add sponges. On day 18 I am supposed to fill the other water trays. . . is that too drastic? I heard that you want to raise the humidity gradually. I'm only on day 2 and am constantly having to refill the sponges. Does that seem normal? It it OK to open the bator and refill the sponge a few times a day? The middle tray is full of water but when I add water to that it does nothing, I'm assuming because the surface area is at it's max.

First make sure your vent holes are closed.

We had to raise our humidity to 80% for ducks. We slipped a washcloth in and used a wooden skewer through an air hole to move it right under it.! Then we used as hot water as we could get out of our tap and poured it on the cloth. There are holes in the bottom of the bator, so we set ours on a plastic tote. Then We would add about 1/2 to 1 cup of water when the humidity fell. The excess water would run out the bottom and we would just clean it up when done.

We found a good thick washcloth held the humidity higher, and longer, and also more steady than a sponge.

i only open the vent holes to inject the water into the container with a long thin rubber hose, that is atached to the seringe it really helps, and i don't have to open the whole lid to the incubator.
