If you don't want to add light you don't have to but all domestic chickens need sunlight .All domestic chickens. Please don't put your chicken in a dim place to deter laying. You aren't helping her by I'm reducing their lighting to give my hens a much-needed break. Some hens suffer from reproductive issues like internal laying, and this is a common solution. I'm not depriving them of light entirely; they still get 8 hours of outdoor time with the rest of the flock. Honestly, the egg industry's expectations are unsustainable and inhumane. Hens need rest, and I'm willing to explore other options, like hormone injections or implants, if I can find a vet who offers them. I was actually asking the original poster for advice, but I appreciate your concern.

Requiring a hen to lay that much with no break even through the winter— massive eggs. and being forced to live a small fraction of a normal chicken lifespan is unnatural in my opinion. they don’t deserve that.
