I tried removing it with warm water with Dawn liquid detergent but that didn't quite work. How do I safely remove the poop and how can I prevent this from happening again?

It's usually stress related (usually it starts from being shipped). You'll have to take a washcloth or paper towel with warm water and rub it off gently. You'll have to just keep cleaning as it happens, I've noticed once they get it, they tend to get it until they feather out.

I found the gentlest way was to make a warm bath in a small container for the chick. I let them soak in it for about 3 minutes while rubbing gently at the stuck on poop at intervals with a qtip, by the end of 3 mins the poop usually softens enough to be clean off complete with some gentle rubbing.

The I wrap the chick in a terry towel to take most of the moisture off.
Next I take a large piece of paper towel to soak up the rest of the water.

Then a gentle blow drying will quickly dry off the chick.

Finally i dab a tiny bit of coconut oil juuust on the vent.

The bathing is usually a fairly calming experience for the chick, the drying may not be so much 🤣

But usually by the third day, they would get used to it :)
