How do I respond to a message on my profile?

A couple of people have left messages on my profile page (I guess this is called a bulletin board?). I am a little confused as to how to respond. Am I supposed to write my response on my bulletin board or do I go to their profile and do it there?

I responded to them on my page and theirs, because I wasn't sure.

Also, sometimes around the forum I will see people do the @ symbol in front of somebody's username. What does this do?

You can handle messages left in your profile any way you choose, keeping in mind that everyone can read them.

Here is a thread explaining @mentions. Briefly, it automatically lets the person who you name know you have mentioned them.
