How do I set up the roost so my Silkie can join in?

I have 3 standards and 2 bantams. My Silkie is very attached to my Brahma bantam and when the Brahma gets up on the roost, the poor little Silkie cries and tries to get up there with her but can't.

The chicks are 5 weeks old and the roost is about 15" high. When I build the permanent roost in the coop, should I keep it very low or build a ladder for the Silkie? She is the only one that can't fly and I don't want her to be left out. The height of my coop is about 3 feet. Thanks!

I have a couple Silkies and the all sleep on the top of the roost. I used a old wood ladder and they just hop from one rung to the next until they are the top. something like that would help out. But at 5 weeks mine were still sleeping on the floor. I think they moved to the roost around 6-8 weeks. I just put them on there a couple of times and then they figured it out. Hope this helps.

You can build a ladder, you can place a milk crate or box under the roost to give her the little wing up she needs to get up on the big girl roost.

Thanks BYC members!

I just had a similar concern. I moved a milk crate under the roost and my Houdan ended up sleeping on that for the night. I guess the next day all the girls had a talk and that night I found everyone had switched places on the roost and my Houdan was able to get up all by herself:)
