How do I stop this

Hardware cloth would be a good fix if it’s the wire. It comes in 1/4” and 1/2” square and can be found in most any hardware store.
If it’s the sharp edges on the feeder you could buy some of the plastic slip on door trim for rabbit cages or just use some other type of feeder.

My money is on the feeder nicking them. My birds spill a lot of feed, but I put a cookie sheet under their open dish and dump the 'wasted' feed back into the dish if the birds that are lower on the pecking order don't clean it all up first. I switched out of a standard chicken feeder and now serve them in a pyrex (heavy) glass, baking dish; it's heavy enough that even if they stand on the edge of the dish, they don't tip it over.

I tried to do something similar but they kept pooping in their food.
