I am the “flock keeper” for a family members 6 hens. They just don’t have time for the girls but I am a huge animal lover so I am glad to do it. They do foot the bill for what is needed so I have a decent budget. We are in So California, very mild weather. We are having our first steady rain today and I just went to check on the girls. The roost area and nest boxes are elevated and nice and dry.
We used sand in the run with a plywood floor and it is wet. No pooling or puddles but wet almost to the center. It’s roughly 9x12’.
I’m going to tell the family handyman (who built it) we will need to do some weather proofing but I’d like to know the best options. There are a lot of sharp edges on the outside (he’s def not a finish carpenter) so I’m not sure about vinyl wrap but I’d love to know what everyone does. It probably would stay up for the winter but something that is easily removable on warm sunny days would be ideal.
Thanks in advance!!

Easiest, quickest, cheapest is usually tarps.

Tarps and sharp edges do not mix well. Get the handyman to eliminate as many sharp edges as he can. You should research to find best buy for tarps (AG stores a good start) and whatever hardware you need to hang it.

If you time it right you will both finish at the same time and you can install together. Leave the most sheltered side completely open.

A photo might really help. I'm having problems envisioning it.

These are the important areas. You also want the feed to stay dry.

Other than those areas, as long as it drains well I don't see a problem. In southern California your weather will never be that cold.

I went with a 20 mil clear tarp for the entire run, 20x10. Buy once, cry once. Keeps them dry and allows sun in. I have a prefab round top run, so it was the best option for me. We are having the same storm, the wind blew the rain in from the NE, but it only reached about 1.5 feet in on 1/4 of the run.
