I keep sunflower seeds in a plastic zip-lock baggie at all times in my pocket and then reach in (crinkle-crinkle) and feed them out of my hand or toss onto the ground for them to scratch...whenever they hear the crinkle of that bag, they come a-runnin!

My solution is to let them out in the afternoon after egg-laying is mostly over, then wait until they go back in on their own to roost to close the gate.
