How do I tell them apart?

I have a trio of silkies. All are white. One is larger than the other 2, by about a week. My problem is, now that the 2 smaller ones are nearly feathered out, I can hardly tell them apart.

How do you tell your same breed birds apart??

I'm thinking bands on the legs, but not sure?

I can tell all my birds apart by their personality. They all act different and do different things. If that doesn't work I would do the bands

I just pick a name and say it... they won't correct me! I had two RIRs and couldn't tell them apart though now that I look at photos, I see small differences I didn't notice before. I have two Australorps who I can tell apart right now (7wks), but I'm not sure it will continue. I don't have very many birds and don't really need to tell them apart, but if I did, I would probably resort to leg bands.

Sometimes you just don't bother.
My kids always want to name them all. So I tell them that all the ones that look alike get the same name.
So, all the partridge cochin hens are "Princess", and all the golden pencilled hambergs are "Goldie" and so on and so forth.
Some you can tell apart. Like the three blue cochins, one is very light she is "Powder", one is medium she is "Royal" and the last is very dark so she is, you guest it, "Navy" , they all have the same last name "Blue" lol.

Leg bands!

If you don't want to order legbands, you can buy the cable ties(zip ties) at a local TSC(or probably any hardware store) and you can pick the color and adjust them accordingly. It's what I use to ID my birds.

If I have a favorite hen that looks alot like some other hens then I take a close look at the comb, especially when they are young. Each comb is different (like a fingerprint) and I take a quick look at the comb to see who is who. Once they get older then you can know them by their quirky behavior or their voice.
