How do I wean my pygmy buckling goat kid??????

How do I wean my pygmy buckling kid. He is old enough to wean, I'm sure. He is eating hay, grain, grass, and is drinking water. I put him in a pen as far away from his dam as possible, but he can still hear and see her. He has been crying all day!!! So much that his voice is getting hoarse! His dam doesn't even seem to care at all. Also, how do keep her from producing milk without it hurting her or getting mastitis?

How old is he? Kids start eating grass, hay, grain, and drinking water before they truly are ready to wean. Eight weeks old is usually considered the minimum age to wean.

Weaning...sucks. He will cry until he loses his voice, that is normal.

As for the dam's milk production, if she is getting really, really bagged up, milk her out partially. Not all the way. Relieve some pressure. If you milked her out all the way, she'd just keep producing the same amount. You want to decrease the demand without letting her get too uncomfortable.

He is almost 11 weeks old. He sounds like he already lost his voice! He has cried ALL day! I feel so bad for him, but I can't take the chance of him breeding his dam. Thank you for answering my questions!

Ohh yea, he is definitely ready then! Poor lad might be hoarse until he gets over it, hah!

I finally got him weaned! I think! When I put him together with his dam he starts nursing! And to my surprise she is still milking!!?? I never milked her after I separated them. It's been almost a month and he still wants to nurse? Is there a way I can get him to stop wanting to nurse and the dam to stop milking?
