interesting--so I have a NN roo and silkie/NN cross hen (I guess an F1 show girl-she is normal feathered and naked necked-should I breed her back to the NN or to a silkie?Usually we eat her eggs.
OK, Let me make sure I'm clear. I breed a turken rooster to a silkie=Showgirl. Then let's say I get only hens, I breed back to silkie rooster, not to another showgirl rooster.
Im pretty sure the first generation will NOT have silkie feathers, so it wont be a showgirl. Making a breed is not something that happens overnight, it takes lots of specific breeding. I've never done it, but I believe the first step after getting Silkie X NN chicks would be to breed them back to a silkie, possibly their parent. But I would only breed the ones with naked necks. If its like snake breeding, then the first generation will be heterozygous for silkie feathing. That means they have the genes to produce it, but they dont show it. I know snake breeding, but Im not too good with chicken breeding.
Do you HAVE a showgirl rooster? If not I would breed all the NN babies back to silkies. Can I suggest you buy showgirl eggs fromsomeone and start from there? It takes SEVERAL generations to get them to look like the ones you see from some people. But.......if you have time go for it!
You know I would love to buy eggs if I can find them, but I bought a bunch of silkie eggs off ebay
and what a disappointment that was. Maybe if I find some eggs on here they will stand a better chance of being good. I do know eggs would be the best way to go.
You can get some eggs from dipsy she has the NN crosses...they would be a good place to start. You would have alot of NN gene to work with and wouldn't have to start fromthe very begining with a turken roo. Or their is a seller on eggbid that I just hatched alot of nice babies from. Can't remember the seller name but she always has the auction at 25.00 for 12+ eggs, and she sent me alot of extras.
