Hey all! Hopefully someone can help....we have a two month old chick that we have to try and find a way to get our RIR's to accept her. We got her from McMurray as a rare chick when we got our batch of Cornish's and they are going to be gone soon and we don't want her by herself so at what point can we put her in with the Reds and how do we get them used to her! I tried holding her and some of the other girls looked at her and walked away and then one ran up and just pecked her really hard...she is white so I know the color will get their attention too.

Any ideas how we can get her "introduced" to them so she isn't stuck by herself in the other side of the coop? Thank you all!

It is never easy to watch..Just make sure she is not too small..Let her get a little older so she can get away..and put something in the run that she can hide behind..like branches or a bucket or anything.. It is easier to introduce several at one time, then just one. Some here on BYC say add her at night on the roost. I have always put them together during the day so I can keep an eye out for injuries. I also add another feeding and water station so the new one has an option to run to so she can eat and drink. I will be putting my three little ones in with the older ones in a couple of weeks..They are 12 weeks now but still small so I am putting it off for awhile..GL.

We use a isolation screen inside the regular coop so that the other girls can see her and get close but not close enough to harm. We use a dog house for here to roost in at night inside her isolation chamber. Let it go for three or four days and watch the old ladies and see when they quit being overly interested in her. Then let her go into the main flock and watch them as they will still have to figure out the pecking order.
