Yeah, the 4" side up, like cmom said. You're not slow. I just have a heard time describing things sometimes; especially when it comes to direction or orientation. I'm directionally challenged.
Mine leaned to roost by themselves in the brooder and grow out cage(the coop wasn't ready when they were) But when we moved them to the coop they wouldn't roost.
I had to go out at night for 3 days and put them up there. Once the Alpha girl figured out that those weird boards on the wall were roosts they would roost by themselves.
And when I added a higher one, they went to that one the first night.
A dowel in the brooder is where I started... now out in the temporary coop they (11 BO & 4 SL) roost on last years dried out sunflower stalks. I keep expecting to see it broken in the morning but it's holding for now.... if only I could get it on video when it does break, what a commotion that'll be!
My cornishX refuse to roost... they prefer an old dog house with straw.
We just put the roost in with ours and they started getting up there by themselves. They will cock their head sideways and look at it a while, then jump right up there. Just give them time and they will roost when they are ready.
