how do y'all pick up quail without them pooping on you

I keep seeing pictures of people cuddling with their quail, without wrapping them in paper towels or anything. I've even seen people putting quail in their shirts. If I did that, I would be pooped on constantly. How do y'all do it?

Wear clothes you don’t care about, and pick them up right after they poop (that should give you about five more seconds before they poop)

I find birds don't poop when they are in cozy/cuddling mama mode. I can cuddle Scrappy for hours without him pooping, but once I set him down on the floor, he produces the biggest and smelliest poop known to quail-kind! Plus when he really has to go, he starts getting all squirmy to let me know.

... However he doesn't grace everyone with a warning and has pooped on other people holding him before, but rarely ever poops on me.

Very interesting! I've noticed that some of my birds will wait too, but they don't wait very long XD However they are still only 3w old, and they get tamer as they grow

I guess it is like "wetting the bed" for the youngsters? XD Since both parents are usually involved in egg-sitting, the adults need the good bladder control or they'd soil their own eggs.

I notice that chicks don’t poop under the heat plate that they consider the nest, they go to the edge and either walk out and poop, or poke their fannies out to poop.

As with any bird, fear not the poop! Wear old clothes and wash up after. Younger ones seem to have less bowel control, and they tend to stiffen and flex before going, so you have a tiny margin of time if you want to put them down.
