Hey, so I don't have children

, but I do have chickens. I hear about 4-H all the time, and I wonder what is involved in volunteering, or maybe mentoring youngsters in showing chickens, etc. I know this is normally done by the parents, but are there also general volunteers? I

nfo would be appreciated!!

I didn't know where to post this...

Try doing a internet search like GOOGLE on your county 4 H extension office. For example when I search on Clark County WA 4 H it gives lots of links and the main ones are the program.

Search for local groups in your area (different groups sometimes have different focus). Call and ask the group leader if they need help. Let them know what you're interested in doing and ask them what, specifically, they'd like help with.

I just filled out the paperwork to become a volunteer/leader at our last meeting. You'll have to fill out a form, then they'll do a background check (at least in our state they do).

Good luck! My children and I are really enjoying 4H!

Call your local extension office and see if there is a group that meets. They can give you the group leaders contact information and I am sure he/she would appreciate your participation. There may also not be a group/leader in the county so this would be a good opportunity for you to provide a great service to the community. I haven't led a chicken group, but I used to lead a rabbit group. It was a great experience! These kids learned about animal husbandry and responsibility. We met once a week during the summer and then took our projects to the county fair and then onto the regional fair. Your extension agent can tell you if there are kids who are interested in raising chickens. Good for you for being interested!
