Before buying/raising chickens I would go to the library and check out and read every book they have on raising chickens, housing chickens and how to keep a chicken healthy. Also read every page on this site!
Ask yourself where are you going to house them and if there is an avain veterinarian nearby. You never know when you might need one.
Also where are you in the country? If you order chicks now will they survive the winter?
I'm not trying to give you a hard time but being prepared can save your chicks life and keep you from a lot of heartache if something goes wrong.
Also make yourself a 'chicken first aid kit'. There are a lot of suggestions on here for one. Make sure you have the basics like antibiotic ointment (the kind WITHOUT PAIN KILLER because it is poison to chicken) blood stop powder, vet wrap, non stick gauze pads, powdered vitamins for their water, a small pair of scissors to trim feathers, mite and lice powder just to name a few.
THEN purchase your chicks, be prepared for good and bad. Enjoy the heck out of them like the rest of us do.
We're always here to answer questions, offer advice and console you if something goes wrong. There are a lot of good people here with oddles of knowledge. Heck I don't mind telling you that most of them are smarter than my vet!
ENJOY!!!
