how do you choose medicated or non chick starter

okay I hear a lot of good reasons for the medicated feed. I"m not sure what is in the feed at the store its just labeled medicated chicks starter or "plain chick starter"

vaccinating them isn't an option they are going to hatch in my incubator.

so where do they get cocci from? if these are my first chickens on my property (and in the incubator and the coop) are they at a lower risk?

and those who fed unmedicated where are you

I'd like to know how big a risk it really is

thanks a lot

Unfortunately, cocci is very easy to get....from what I've read, a single wild bird dropping, in the run, can pass it on to them, if that wild bird had cocci in its system. That's why I chose an amprolium feed. It should help them build up immunities, which will still help them when they are older, eating unmedicated layer feed.

I found the ingredient list on a tag/label sewn into one of the feed bag seams. But I'm sure you could hassle an employee to pull up the information in their computer or order book, to find the ingredient list for a particular type of feed.

I feed my chicks the Purina Mills medicated untill they are 6 weeks old by then they build a immune to it.

Most birds need a longer time to build up an immunity than 6 weeks, and they can catch it at any age.

I keep my birds on medicated starter (Amprolium only) unti they go on layer feed. It is added insurance, and will not hurt them.

so in order to build immunity while on the amprolium chick starter they need to be exposed to it right? the amprolium is not like a vaccine right? its to help them fight off any cocci they come across then their bodies will know how to fight it themselves?

so can little chicks not exposed to any other birds wild or domestic, get cocci from themselves? like they would be born with it?

hmm I think I need to look into this more. THen go get some medicated feed
