This post is because of a thread from last week..
Favorite breeds/Dream Flock breeds...

It got me to thinking more about what I would really like to have..
Which is, show quality Brahmas.
I would like to have 10 hens and 1 rooster..

My husband said its do-able, but I would have to thin down my current flock(s).
How do I choose?
I cant just get rid of my chickens.
I'm not like 'some people. ...and i dont know any of those 'some people personally. Just some things I have read about.
I love all of my chickens, in fact, some of them are old and out of their prime. I still love them and I care for them as I would my own child. Im sure most people do the same.

I guess I need to feel just how greatly I want those big chickens...

I really, really want them.

My husband thinks i have too much on my plate now.

JoJo & Janis have a huge coop/house..
Cash Money has 4 hens and a nice coop/house. (Silkies)
Shaemus has 3 hens, nice coop/house. Shaemus is silkie/satin, I think and he has 1 Satin hen and 2 silkie hens.
Genghis Khan has 2 hens in a nice coop/house.. He and 1 hen are Polish other hen is a silkie
I have a game rooster, Chester, with only 1 hen that dont live with him yet... I need another hen or two for him.
I have a coop/house for all of my juvenile Silkie chicks.
I have a coop/house for my almost juvenile silkie chicks.
I have 2 brooders, not full now...
I dont want to add another huge coop/house area...
I have the room, just not the desire to add more on...
Decisions...
OH....
How could I forget...
I also have a special coop/house for SPECIAL chickens... currently 9 living in there.. only 1 of those has"special needs" which is Picasso.
The other 8 are just the unwanted, almost culled, ugly ducklings that will not be sold or used for breeding..
Mostly saved from other peoples chicks.. only 2 are from my chickens..

Sound like you just have a pure case of "Chicken Math".
Don't choose.. Lol hahaha

You can get too much on your plate. And it can get expensive and a lot of extra work.

I guess I am one of those people - I keep a flock, not individual birds. Birds come and go in my flock. Sometimes it is easy, and sometimes not so much.

I would sell a flock, if I were you, cause then you could be pretty sure that people would not be eating them. And they would stay together for the most part, and be happier with that.

I do keep my chicken math under control, I would rather do a good job with less birds, than a poor job with too many.

Mrs K

To make it easier to choose who goes and who stays, I think about what they could bring to someone else. Then I am eager to help bring them together with the right person.

Writing a pros and cons list for each group would be helpful. So would answering a few questions about each group of chickens.

What is this group bringing to the table?

What need is this group fulfilling?

Would this group fulfill someone else's needs better than mine (think starter show flock for a 4h student, empty nester retiree looking for a hobby flock, or young family on a homestead that wants to learn with already grown birds).

How bonded am I to this particular set of chickens?

Can I try this project again in the future after I give the Brahmas a try?

Can't be a good breeder without being able to cull. And the idea of giving away any non wants is being selfish by putting your problems on others cause you can't do something. That's not mean that's true
Ps he's right too

LoL.
Thats why I have a special coop for the undesireables... I cant give them away to someone who might not feel as strong about non breeding them, allowing them to breed.

AND, since I posted that comment, I have sold and rehomed almost all of the silkies.
I have one silkie roo and 3 hens.
One polish roo and one hen.
I kept the best quality of all the chicks.
My peafowl.
And I still have the special coop, they will live their best life out here with us.

Still not really ready to get those big brahmas, yet.
