How do you control fleas ?

I've spoken to CS thru the 800 number on the Advantage box; I said the product is not performing this year as we are having a HUGE problem (as well as the rest of you). His reply is the weather is such this year that there are so many fleas (for whatever that is worth). They recommended treating at three week intervals instead of four.

There was a huge discussion on backyard herds, including many possible alternatives, some natural, like garlic.

A word of caution though; if using indoor powders, bombs and what not; CAGED BIRDS AND FISHTANKS are at serious risk of accidental poisoning; please be careful. Also, cats will lick their paws after walking on a treated surface so thorough wash up after treatment is a must.

I have no idea whats in it but I use fleabusters powder. It treats the carpets and furniture and I buy it online. For all I know it may be borax or DE, but it has worked for me and I use frontline plus on the dog.

It is a fine powder and all aquariums, electronics and such needs to be covered during tratment. The house hasn't had fleas in years.

I have done the vacuuming, spraying, flea baths, etc, it sucks

Salt works wonders....place on your carpets and wait a few days, then vacuum. Bath your dogs and spray a mixture of diluted ACV and garlic powder on their skin.

Old-fashioned flea collars work great also.

I use lufenuron (Program, Sentinel). Have used it since it first came out. I haven't seen a single flea in years and I have three indoor/outdoor dogs. It doesn't work on adult fleas, but it prevents larvae from maturing, thus preventing infestation. I don't even use anything else for adult fleas anymore and I have NO flea problem at all.

ON our dogs we use Comfortis which is a feed thru product. It does not kill ticks but man it works great for fleas. It is a little pricey but worth it.

I'm having the same issues trying to control the fleas.

I bombed the house on Sunday, then followed that up with salt on the carpet. Bathed the dogs with flea shampoo. Washed their bedding and mine. Yesterday I gave in and bought some Frontline to apply. My Maltepoo had a bad reaction to another topical solution I tried a year ago, so I was very cautious. But he did fine with this. Planning to add garlic to the dog water.

The topical stuff works best on a dog that has not been bathed for a few days. The oils in the skin help to distribute and work.
We use Comfortis on the big dogs and Advantage on the little dogs and the cat. I only treat about every three months.

When we first got the puppy and adopted our siamese, we had a flea problem for the very first time.
We put the puppy on Comfortis and he'll be staying on them, except for a winter break of December thru February. We put flea drops on the cats for one month only (since they are both now totally indoor cats) and we boraxed the carpets.
The fleas are gone.

Well misery loves company, so I'm glad I saw this posting, because we've battled them worse this year than any other year (last year stood out, but this year has it trumped). I've spent at least $300 on Frontline Plus this year, and it's not making a dent! For some reason, Adams worked decently, but I just don't think about spraying it on every couple of days, and so they pop right back up. That's the ONLY thing I'm looking forward to cold weather for...getting rid of the fleas!!! Next year I'm trying a different product!
