How do you count your chickens?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that counts by breed, age or color.

I notice you said WHEN you get more, not IF you get more! Good on you for recognizing that chicken math will soon overcome you & you will be powerless over the cute widdle fuzzybuttz...

I seldom count because I'm really better off not knowing how many I have.

But when I do count, I count by breed and count by two's. 2,4,6.... Then because there are so many of them and the little buggers are so fast I just get a close count then round it up to the nearest ten. In January when I sold the flocks down due to my health I thought I had around 400.

I was under counting by 18.

Before I separated roosters I just waited until they were up for the night and did a quick head count. If I got the wrong number I counted by breed. Now I go out and count what I have separated into a rooster run. There are 21 in there, and I wouldn't be too upset if something ate the evil barred rock roos, so about once a week I count, and if they are there I don't worry. Then I have 13 chicks and 2 keets in the brooder pen, that I do by color. Then I have the more secure coop and run with my pullets and one rooster of each breed that I would like to keep, that will eventually be separated into breeding pens one of these days. They get counted by breed and I don't leave until I get the correct count every night.
