How do you crack your own corn?

I would NEVER feed my chicks just corn, I just want to include it in my homemade mix. My chicken feed is already up to 15-20 ingredients, and I have done hundreds of hours of research

(exhausting, by the way) on the subject. I'm glad you pointed that out though, because someone else reading this post may not have known. I read, and was told by a few different feed manufacturers that growing chicks (up to 8 weeks) are supposed to have 19-20% protein feed, or are you speaking about growing chicks over that age range?

The protein % is relative to the purpose that the chix-s are bred for. Broiler/Fryers are fast growing birds and they get the most protein dense feed. A special feed is given to birds destined for breeder flocks etc.

Flint corn is I guess a Heritage feed. It is not a GMO, but if it were I would still feed it. The man I got mine from sold his corn by the truck and trailer load to Game Chicken Breeders in Puerto Rico. They would load an extra pallet or two on the tail gate and drop it off to me because I was only 2 miles off the Interstate and I had a forklift. The grains are small and very hard. They make your chickens scratch like crazy to find every morsel and the hard exterior gives their gizzard a real work-out. There is no belly fat on chickens fed lose scratch feed, pellets, and flint corn in heavy litter.

Last winter my father found some old unpopped popcorn at his house and threw it on the wood stove in a pot with water and let it simmer for an hour or two. My girls loved it...it was plump and softer than unpopped popcorn. Yes, these birds are spoiled!

We bought my son (age 3), a grinder for Easter...he wanted one and we figured it was better than candy. Was only $25 on Amazon and when set to a course grind, he can work it himself.

We set him up right in the run and he grinds corn for the girls... He has a blast, they go nuts for the treat, and no mess to clean up!.

I can't seem to find organic cracked corn anywhere! I used to buy it online from Scratch and Peck feed but they no longer ship it and they only carry the 40lb bags. So my question is, for those of you who buy whole corn and crack it yourself, what do you use? Please don't say a hammer, that would take forever!
