How Do You Feed Your Ducks?

enchanted-

I would just get the purina flock raiser, thats what i use on both my domestics and ornamentals and mix it with chicken scratch right now for fat in the winter. the mazuri is really un-needed and from my understanding more expensive then the other brands

When i feed i have been using the old metal poultry feed trays with the guard removed with a small bowl or tub of water next to it so they aren't taking the food to there swimming pond and dirtying it up.

KansasKid - Yes, the Mazuri is much more expensive, between $34-$39 per fifty pounds, as opposed to $13.95 for the local brand of Flockraiser.

i appreciate all the advice and pictures. i'm just overwhelmed with how messy ducks are, compared to chickens. It doesn't help that i have been pretty sick lately.

i have a cake tin like you suggested, gofasterstripe, so i'll try that and see if it works.

HottentotTeal - what kind of ducks are those?

When I use the Mazuri feed for our rehab ducks and feel that it is too big for them, I whirl it in the blender for a bit.

I feed Nutrena Layer pellets, and use 2 feed troughs that are 4 foot long and about 5 inches wide. They come with a reel that runs across the top, but I removed that for the ducks. They also have legs that fold up or down, so I can adjust how high they are, but I just leave them folded up so the trough sets right on the ground under a steel quonset type hog hut. I also keep my water quite a ways away from the feed so they don't muck it all up. Works great, and there is NO wasted feed this way. I occasionally will add a little cracked corn. I also have a large hanging feeder that I will use over the winter which hangs in the coop.

I also went and bought the Mazuri feed for mine about a month ago.

No matter what bag i get, they won't even eat 1/4 of it probably, by the time it goes bad and the guy at the feed store cut the bag open so i could see the size of the pellets, so i figured it was the honorable thing to do.

Okay, i was at the 99 Cent Store and saw some plastic shoe boxes and thought they looked like they would make great food dishes, so bought a couple. The kids do manage to occasionally tip them over, but so far they are working very well as feed containers. i'm also down to feeding them the moistened Mazuri once a day, in the morning. After that i put out a container of the flockraiser crumbles for them to nibble throughout the day. They also get either peas or chopped lettuce once a day.

i also finally got a drain valve put in their kiddie pool, so no more sump pumping every day. i just open it at night to drain, then fill it up in the morning. Now i just need to figure out how to keep their pen from turning into a giant mud pit every day.
