If the OP's passion is for a specific variety, then who are you or I to tell her "no, don't do it," and throw up all sorts of roadblocks, or tell her to find a different project.

Sonoran - your mail box is full, I was just going to say thanks

I found out what I wanted. if anyone wants to take part in my idea, or is working with Sebrights {any color} pm me

Sorry, but we aren't throwing up the roadblocks, just telling her what are already there. If she wants to do it then she's going to have to show one heck of a lot of dedication. I know a breeder who has 37 years of experience, has been on the standards committee of her breed the last 12 years and has failed on both of her attempts at getting new varieties recognized. I have hauled her feed for her the last two years and I know that she spends about $500/month on feed and she still doesn't have the quantity of animals to bring about success. She also travels to shows all over the country and every last dime she makes goes to either her basic necessities (very basic) and her "critters". The commitment and knowledge required to bring in a new variety, especially in a breed with many current varieties, is unbelievable. I would never try it and my chickens are in a $40K barn built specifically for my show critters.

Boy, oh boy, you seem to have a squewed view of things. Telling someone who is beginning a journey that there is a road block up ahead, is NOT "throwing up all sorts of roadblocks". It's preparing her for what lies ahead, so she can determine for herself how to get around it when she reaches it. You are telling her to have a nice trip, everything will be fine. And then she does get to the roadblock, and isn't prepared how to handle it. Lot of good your misplaced encouragement will do her then.

OK OK..stop ....go to your corners and face the wall! Wait until your have all taken beep breaths and then slowly turn around and apologize. You guys always blow me away with your intelligence and experience-

Hi Dick,

Good thing that you added that second post. I wondered there for a moment why you'd left out so much of the information.
I do think that it's great that you're trying to be helpful, but I wonder how helpful to the fancy and the APA it will be in the longterm if you continue to spoonfeed nonmembers information that they should be joining in order to receive. I mean, this person in theory says she wants to create two new varieties, in effect, contributing to the fancy. I feel that people should put their money where their mouth is, and support the fancy first, even if it's by such a miniscule effort as simply buying a membership. After all, this is the fancy that will provide the framework and means for widespread recognition of her new creations, assuming that she's successful with making them and getting them accepted. We need to encourgae people to ask what they can do for the fancy, not what the fancy can do for them. As you know, lack of involvement is probably one of our biggest handicaps.

I am a member of both the APA and ABA. I wouldn't have joined either one of them if more people had your attitude.

I joined the APA *after* I became interested in helping Marans to gain APA approval. *After* I started working on the approval process, and *after* I asked lots and lots of dumb questions. Fortunately, there were many encouraging people out there who actually ANSWERED my dumb questions, and ENCOURAGED me to become involved. The old saying is true: you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Chasing people away doesn't help the people OR the APA.

Since the OP has obtained the information they were seeking and have asked for reach outs by PM, I will close this thread. Best wishes in your venture.
