I am sooo new to this whole genetics of chicken thing. How do you get lavender in chickens? I was thinking about starting a couple of projects, one with orpingtons and the other with ameracaunas ( I only want green or blues eggs from the ameracaunas, if possible) . But I don't know what birds to start out with? I didn't understand the chart that was on some of these threads, so can some one REALLY simplify it for me. Will this concept work with almost all breeds? Like if I try some silkies?

well lavender lav/lave or selfblue is a recessive gene that you NEED to entroduce to your breeding program first then mate resulting chicks to be able to see the lavender gene

so if you want a lavender orpinton, you have to introduce the genes from a breed that has already the lavender genes...it will be a hard task as you need time and lots of hatchings to get back to the orpinton type...but I wish you good luck....

breeds that I know carry lavender

araucana
cochin(bantam)
silkies

There are already breeders of lavender ameraucanas too. I would think it would be much cheaper to hatch eggs from one of them and use that stock to add to your own than it would be to start from scratch adding a new breed and then breeding out undesireable traits.

I have some lavender orpington project birds originating from hinkjc. I am very happy with them and expect they will start laying in a few more months... I am REALLY looking forward to having fun with the lavender genes!

THere are plenty of lavener silkies available, as well. I believe that there is paperwork and a plan in place to have a qualifying meet in 2010 for recognition. Last December at the Silkie National the judges said it was time! The quality and numbers are certainly there.
