This is how we operate. We feed non medicated organic feed, with probiotic and kelp mixed in and it seems to work rather well. We add apple cider vinegar to the water once a week and its fun

From my flock management thread stickied at the top:

7) Practice good biosecurity..disinfect shoes before and after visting the feedstore and shows, quarantine new birds, etc Under no circumstances, sell, trade, or give away a bird that shows sign of infection or has contacted another bird who shows signs of infection, or comes from a flock that has shown signs of infection, now or in the past.

I never add started birds. All are hatched here except the very few who came from the hatchery. People must spray their shoes with bleach solution when they arrive before walking around the property. No one can bring back any bird they've gotten from me, ever, for any reason.

Immunity is a great thing, and that is your first line of defense-birds with healthy immune systems-but if you become sloppy and keep buying flea market chickens, all the immunity in the world may not have much of a chance. My policy for any respiratory illness that may appear in the future (never have had any here) is to cull, period. That's the way old time chicken keepers did it.

Thank you all for taking the time to tell me the measures you take for your flock.
There are many different views out there. Wow!

SpeckledHen, I have read your 10 commandments. Thank you from all us newbies.

MakNugget, Haha. Glad once you finally get out of the sterilized environment, you let your girls poop all over you. I'm sure they enjoy doing it! Lol.
